heavy guitars start this one with a funk influenced riff, in unison with the bass (a bit like Rage Against The Machine)
their style is metal, and they have a lead melody around 0:20
the singers sing in unison, one singer sings in a lower octave to the other
then there is a drum break where the lead singer technically raps
the next section brings in a new melody
the whole song appears to be in a dorian mode
around 1:50 the lead singer raps again
this song is extremely catchy and fun to listen to.
I really like this band.
They have such a versatility of vocal techniques in the one song.
around 2:20 the lead singer screams a bit like Marilyn Manson
All the bands members play an instrument. 2 guitars and a drummer
Wait - 3 instruments, so one is a bass player.
I'm going to listen to it a second time to get more of the details in.
2nd listen
The song starts with mosh-pit inducing sense of energy.
Then a layered lead guitar melodic line
Then the lyrics for the first verse come in.
At the second part of the verse the cymbals get more involved and the song is so hard hitting but dynamic
The chorus is melodically different to the verse, but utilises similar melodic theme, but extended somewhat.
This band really know what they are doing musically.
At 1:36 something new happens.
The lead singer sings in a lower octave than the first verse, but his backing vocal is an octave higher.
At this point, to my opinion he sounds like Bon Jovi's lead singer!
Even at low octaves you can hear the vibrato in his voice. Whenever I see a musician who both sings & plays guitar, I instantly think they were born to do music.
the lead singer is something special but his band mates really work extremely well with him.
They operate as a unit & they all convey a sense of unity.
However, this lead singer stands out to me compared to other lead singers because
3rd listen
He writes the lead lines, a bit like Jack Black from The White Stripes
His image reminds me of the lead singer from Red Hot Chili Peppers, long black hair and shirtless.
He can sing well & scream.
That is always a great thing, as some people don't understand scream based singing.
He also raps in the song! Since the song is so unique, and compatible with so many audiences (considering the variety of vocal techniques)
I see the lead singer as an artist. He is bringing something very different to rock music.
You could say they are the next Red Hot Chili peppers, but their music is more in the direction of Heavy Metal.
4th listen!
The very start of the song the main guitar plays the main riff alone, then the bass is added to it. Then as the drums come in, there is ANOTHER guitar layer.
Then if you consider the vocals are using octave based layers too, this shows the intentionality of their layering.
Even the rapped sections are layered in 'octaves'!
There is a song I once heard on a Burnout Revenge/Dominator game by 'Army Of Anyone' called 'Doesn't Seem To Matter' and this song is quite similar to that one in it's selection of modal scale & heaviness of guitar mixing.
I'm going to stop reviewing it there but this song definitely scores a 10/10.
Turn the volume up to 11!
I've been a bit unfair to the drummer. He really goes at it and his drumming is diverse and professional.
Cool!
I am a BASHfan now.
