damn, the guitars, drums, bass sound great from the start
then the female singer comes in with perfect notation
very impressed by the bass player's notational decorations!
the guitars in the chorus take on a new life at this point sounding so reminiscent of the original track.
This vocalist appears to be a mezzo soprano, and if i'm not mistaken has a slightly lower vocal tone than the male singer who sung the original, but he did have quite a high vocal tone so this is no criticism of her. it's just an interesting observation.
when you hear a song cover & the vocalist sounds different, it is much easier to differentiate them from the primary singer and that is a way to clearly compare their skill level.
Let's put it this way, I enjoy this version as much as the original.
She has a very interesting voice, I'm finding it hard to place exactly who she reminds me of - a bit like Amy Lee from Evanescence but... a bit more in the direction of Avril Lavinge - but slightly lower in vocal tone.
Who is it she reminds me of? It'll come to me. I'll figure it out... maybe.
There are some effects (chorus) on her vocals in the chorus which create some diversity in the song structure along with the change in instrument styles. Acoustic guitars in the verses, more distortion amplification in the hooks. Really well thought out cover, nice production.
the drummer plays rhythmically tight, I'm guessing they played along to a metronome as it sounds so well synchronised & professionally mixed.
It's a shame bandcamp player tends to stop quite a lot for me. I'll persevere.
This isn't a song review by the way, this is an Artist Analysis.
You know, the lead singer in Young Lungs has a unique vocal tone and rather than trying to explain who she is similar to, I'm thinking about a tweet I just saw which i agreed with 100%:
"Don't let people tell you who you are."
So instead of trying to desperately draw comparisons, i'd prefer to just say she sounds great. I'm not entirely convinced the reverb was necessary but that is only subjective improvement i'd suggest.
She's a unique singer and the band are excellent musicians.
What more could you ask for!

Shoutout to twitter.com/culturemusik1 for recommending Young Lungs to me.
