Please note, this is not a Song Review. It is an Artist Analysis.
1st listen
haunting start. soft emotional voice with an english accent.
there is something definitely unique about this singer.
Somewhere between Ellie Goulding & Lilly Allen...
The production is very suggestive of the direction she wants to take her music.
The high notes at 2:22 are beautiful.
Similar to the singer who sings 'Black Horse & A Cherry Tree' more than Lilly Allen.
Some creatively layered harmonies ad-libs at 3:00 onwards shows this singer songwriter's ability to define her own musical direction as opposed to trying to be someone else.
I'm going to listen to it again.
Creatively she is a bit like Imogen Heap, with intelligent song production skills.
I'm not gonna give this a score, because this is a demo. The production can be re-done, but what needs to be recognised is her singing & songwriting.
I'm still trying to understand what type of artist she is yet.
I gotta be honest, without naming singers from generations ago, it's difficult to explain, but she is a bit like Annie Lennox from the Eurythmics, because she is not just a singer-songwriter, she has a real sense of musical direction, like Prince. She's playing guitar in the instrumental too.
okay, found it.

2nd listen
So. The instrumental starts with some wobbling ambient textures, the vocals come in haunting and smoothly soft. The lyrics express some pain but strength & overcoming. There is power in her voice when she wants there to be.
The beat starts to drop around 0:55 and you can hear her guitar playing abilities. Almost sounds like a Latin type style of playing (a la Ricky Martin, Carlos Santana, Jennifer Lopez).
The music is dreamy and mysterious.
The vocals have occasional delays and filtering, the hi-hat patterns are varied and interesting.
The songwriting is unique with a variety of high & low notes, very decorated and exquisite.
There is a break in the drums with arpeggiated melodic section which ends around 2:50.
The hook comes back and is now developed with repeated lines panned to the right channel while the delayed filtered lines are in the left channel, surrounding the listener with a creative collage of subtly swelling sophisticated sound.
I've figured it out. She has the potential to be the British Nelly Furtado I say that because Nelly is a great singer-songwriter who had most success when teaming up with Timbaland.
I would recommend that Lydia Guy teams up with a producer called 'Bravei', who makes Electrohouse/Dance Pop.

With a larger budget, Swedish House Mafia / Calvin Harris (direction & style of collaboration).
